Summary
Fly up & ride down. This is a top MTB experience, taking in challenging trails, spectacular scenery and a truly varied cultural and topographical backdrop. If you have 5 days to spare and love to spend time in the saddle admiring spectacular scenery, take our advice and fly with us to Jomsom in the Lower Mustang region, and spend your time riding down the incredible Kali Gandaki valley – the deepest river gorge in the world.
Trip Description
We visit ancient pilgrimage sites, follow sweeping single tracks through alpine meadow, pedal over precarious footbridges, cross paths with mule trains, and marvel constantly at towering 8,000m peaks. These are just some of the highlights of this world-class ride. Add comfortable accommodation, great food and warm hospitality, and you are assured one of the best XC rides in Nepal.
The adventure begins with a dawn flight from Pokhara to the mountain airstrip at Jomsom (2,800m). Our bikes are safely loaded into the back of the plane. It’s a short flight – only 20 minutes, but in that short time, we leave behind the lush vegetation of the sub-tropical mid-hills and enter the Himalayan rain-shadow, where shades of blue, grey and ochre dominate the skyline.
From Jomsom, we climb 1,000m to explore the wonderful single track trails around Muktinath (3,800m), a revered pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists at the foot of the Thorung La – one of the highest trekking passes in Nepal. We head onto explore Ranipauwa, which boats some awesome downhills. There are spectacular views in every direction. We follow some fabulous trails down to the charming village of Kagbeni, before joining the trail heading back into Jomsom.
From Jomsom we head south down the Kali Gandaki valley, passing through the charming villages of Marpha, Tukucke, Kalopani and Tatopani before emerging once again in the lush Himalayan foothills and meeting our return transport back to Pokhara. In four days, we will climb 1,300m, descend 3,300m and cover over 130kms of single track, jeep track and river bed trails. In our opinion, this ride rocks!
